What is the Alliance for Innovation on Maternal Health?

The National Alliance for Innovation on Maternal Health (AIM) is a federally-funded program. Michigan was the first of seven states to bring this program to their state’s hospitals and birthing mothers in 2015. The Michigan Alliance for Innovation on Maternal Health (MI AIM) is dedicated to improving the culture of maternal safety by decreasing preventable severe maternal morbidity and mortality through the implementation of early recognition patient safety bundles. These evidence-based guidelines offer clinical and non-clinical staff resources aimed at improving clinical care processes and patient outcomes. The patient safety bundles help fully equip hospitals with actionable protocols, necessary equipment, staff education, and staff drills to prevent and adequately treat these severe maternal events.

Our Purpose

The MI AIM initiative builds upon the work that was already being done by the Michigan Health and Hospital Association (MHA) Keystone Center, which has supported and guided Michigan hospitals in the identification of best practices for improving maternal health outcomes. The MI AIM program also aligns with one of Michigan’s Infant Mortality Reduction Plan goals to support better health status of women and girls through an enhanced network of support systems to promote mother, infant and child health.
